讲座简介：Geographic information system (GIS) first appeared in the early 1960s for storing, manipulating, and analyzing land use data. Over the past 50 years, many tools have been developed to form the core, or the foundation, of GIS. Examples of these tools, which represent “traditional” GIS, include buffer and overlay for vector data and local, focal, zonal, and global operations for raster data. With the introduction of Web 2.0 in the 2000s, GIS has branched into a number of new applications such as Web mapping, collaborative Web mapping, and volunteered geographic information. These developments represent “new” GIS. The combination of traditional and new applications has enriched the discipline of GIS and ensured its important role in scientific research. The presenter of this talk started working in computer mapping and GIS in the 1970s and offered the first GIS course at the University of Idaho in 1988. His first edition ofIntroduction to Geographic Information Systemswas published by McGraw-Hill in 2000, and the eighth edition will be published in early 2015. The talk will offer an overview of traditional and new GIS and the evolution of GIS.

主讲人简介：

张康聪（Kang-tsung Chang）教授是地理信息科学领域的国际知名教授，在美国克拉克大学获得博士，1971-1974. 加州州立大学Northridge分校助教授，1974-1976. 克拉克大学助教授，1976-1981. 北达科他大学副教授，1982-1986. 北达科他大学教授，1981-1984. 北达科他大学地理系主任，1986-现在，爱达荷大学教授，先后为明尼苏达大学、瑞典斯得哥尔摩大学、国立台湾大学、台湾开南大学客座教授。其教学科研领域包括：地理信息系统、地图制图、空间分析；当前关注的研究方向为城市化过程——驱动力及其时空动态分析。

Kang-tsung Chang著有影响广泛的地理信息系统专著三部：

1.《地理信息系统导论》（第七版），美国McGraw-Hill高等教育出版社，2013；

2.《基于VBA的ArcObject编程：面向任务的方法》（第二版），美国CRC出版社，2007；

3.《GIS中的数字影像处理》，美国ONWORD出版社，1997。
