Notes:

1.Tuesday:The Pitch of Poetry: Starting with Edgar Allen Poe's "The Poetic Principle" this essay explores an American poetry traditions that rejects didacticism, moralism, and "duty" in favor or aestheticism, sensation, and intensity, even if the face of being accused of decadence or perversity. Poets considered will include Blake, Poe, Emily Dickinson, Whitman, Hart Crane, Walt Whitman and the philosophy of Emerson. Includes a discussion of the relation of "debunking" false consciousness to arrive at "authenticity:" In contrast, the essays argues for a view of poetry of competing frames, grounded in the philosophy of Emerson and Wittgenstein and the sociology analysis of Erving Goffman and George Lakoff. The poem does not resolve or removed frames but potentates multiple interpretations. The essay offers a critique of a "humanism" that rejects as barbaric or animal-like or primitive attempts to move beyond rationalism to a richer engagement with "reason." In the course, it charts the way in which unconventional poetry is stigmatized, offering charts of negative terms for poetic invention.

2. Wednesday: To close and quick readings of selected poems by Stein, Williams, Creeley, Zukofsky, Reznikoff, Grenier, Mac Low, Tan Lin, Bruce Andrews, Ron Silliman, Lyn Hejinian, Caroline Bergvall, Tracie Morris. Poems to be read will be prepared before hand.

3. Thursday: "The Expanded Field of L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E": The essay gives a comprehensive account of the history and practice of the poetry and poetics around L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E magazine, edited by Charles Bernstein and Bruce Andrews in 1978-1981. Covers relation of modernist poetry as background, as well as philosophical, political, and social influences. Discusses several formal approaches to the work, including collage, the use of found material, the elision of the speaking voice or subject, new approaches to lyric, and alternative forms of essay writing.

5.查尔斯•伯恩斯坦先生是美国艺术与科学院院士，美国诗人、文艺理论家。伯恩斯坦先生现任美国宾夕法尼亚大学英语系英语与比较文学教授，主要从事诗歌创作与研究。在现代派和当代诗歌诗学研究方面有很深的研究，是20世纪70年代兴起于美国的‘语言诗派’的代表人物和理论家。其学术和创作涉及诗歌、戏剧、电影、音乐等多个领域，曾任美国现代语言学会（MLA）诗歌分会执行委员会委员，现为MLA书目和文本评估组执行委员会委员，中国外语类核心期刊杂志《外国文学研究》杂志编委。自20世纪70年代以来，伯恩斯坦教授出版了20多部诗集，5部歌剧剧本，3部论文集和1部诗文合集，编辑出版众多诗集和论文集，曾获‘哈尔•皮维’新诗奖等多项大奖和多项国家艺术基金。他的诗歌和论文被翻译并刊载到墨西哥、阿根廷、古巴、巴西、挪威、瑞典、芬兰、丹麦、意大利、法国、德国、奥地利、希腊、西班牙、俄罗斯、中国、韩国和日本等国家的600余种期刊杂志上。其作品集被翻译成法语（2012年），中文（2011年《诗选》和2013年《论文选》），西班牙语（2013年），俄语（2012年），德语（2013年出版于奥地利，2014将出版于Lux Books），缅甸语（2009年），瑞典语（2008年），葡萄牙语（2008年）和芬兰语（2006年）。
