Neurocriminology: Understanding the neurobiological bases of antisocial behavior

Abstract:

Although important progress has been made in delineating replicable psychosocial risk factors for antisocial and criminal behavior, interest in the neurobiological correlates of crime and violence has increased in recent years. This may be partly due to the development of new technologies including structural and functional brain imaging, as well as the increasingly easier application of psychophysiological approaches alongside the computer revolution.In this talk I will introducecontemporary neurobiological methodologiescommonly used in criminological research andtake a broad perspective on crime to include antisocial, aggressive and psychopathic behavior. Empirical findings will be briefly summarized in the fields of genetics, structural and functional brain imaging, neuropsychology, and psychophysiology.The knowledge of biological bases of antisocial behaviorhas begun to impact various aspects of criminal justice systemsand may enhance forensic psychological assessment and inform policies and procedures regarding the identification,management and treatment of various types of adult and juvenile offenders.

Write and publish papers on psychology/psychiatry journals

Abstract:

Dr. Gao has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and served as reviewer for multiple journals. She has also been successful in getting research funding from national and local agencies including the National Institute of Health. In this talk she will share her experiences on how to write and publish in English at various psychology and psychiatry journals. Tips on how to prepare for manuscript submission will be given, including choosing appropriate journals and structuring manuscripts following APA format. Specific writing examples will be given.

Brief bio:

Yu Gaois an associate professor of psychology at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. She graduated from Beijing Normal University, and obtained her doctoral degree at University of Southern California in Los Angeles. After that she spent two years as a postdoc researcher at the University of Pennsylvania.The overarching goal of her research is to identify biosocialbases ofdisruptive behaviors in children and criminal behavior in adults. Techniques she uses in her research program include autonomic and central nervous system psychophysiology, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, and familial and extra-familial psychosocial and environmental processes.
